Early Years Foundation Stage
When
children first come to school, we aim for it to be a happy,
stimulating, exciting place for them to learn and play.
The children in Reception follow a
specially designed curriculum that covers 6 areas of
learning: Personal Social and Emotional Development,
Communication Language and Literacy, Problem solving,
Reasoning and Numeracy, Knowledge and Understanding of the
World, Physical Development and Creative Development.
Through play and investigation, pupils
develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards
learning and build confidence in core skills.
The Reception children’s learning is all
planned in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage
guidance which incorporates the Early learning Goals that
the children will work towards. They are divided into the 6
areas of learning:
Personal Social and Emotional
Development
This is where the children develop social skills,
respect for others and a positive self image.
Communication Language and
Literacy
This includes reading and writing and developing
speaking and listening skills through role-play, stories
and rhymes. Phonics are taught daily and are a very
important part of learning to read and write,
Problem solving, Reasoning and
Numeracy
This is developing and understanding of mathematical
areas such as number, shape, pattern and problem
solving.
Knowledge and Understanding of
the World
This helps the children to develop the skills and
understanding to make sense of the world around them.
This includes learning about the past, people,
environments and other cultures as well as ICT.
Physical Development
This area is concerned with developing fine motor skills
as well as children’s large body movements, e.g.:
running, balancing, throwing and catching. Children
develop their skills of coordination, control, movement
and manipulation indoors and outdoors.
Creative Development
The children explore, learn and play using a wide
variety of art and craft activities. They learn to
express themselves through their art, role-play,
movement and music.
Early Years Foundation Stage Profile
The Profile is an ongoing assessment and a way of recording
the children’s progress and learning needs throughout the
year. The profile records observations, photographs and
examples of children’s work to show their learning
throughout the year and evaluates their achievements within
the 6 areas of learning.
